Sweet Home Barak Obama

Frequent bloggy readers of Dogs & Jeans know I have often professed my love for the South. Southern folks are some of the warmest people on the planet as welcoming to a stranger as a cool rain is on a hot Tuscaloosa August afternoon. And if I lived south of the Mason Dixon line, I'd weigh 300 pounds since I'd never stop eating hush puppies, chicken fried steak, ribs, hoppin' john, deep fried okra, biscuits and gravy all washed down with jugs of sweet tea.

However, for many residents the South has been a place of segregation, suppretion, violence and haterd. While this has improved greatly in the last 40 years, there is still plenty of improvement to be made, and I'm not talking Blue vs Red. However, last night's victory by Barak Obama signals that, perhaps in my lifetime, all of America will be free of prejudice.

This article by Peggy Wallace Kennedy, the daughter of the late Alabama governor George Wallace sums up how change can happen one heart at a time better than I can. Please give it a read.

Back to the funny tomorrow!

If you move down here to Mississippi, I promise to keep you in top physical shape even while eating all that food (if you know what I mean *wink, wink*).

Yeah, I'm trying to teach my daughter that color doesn't matter. She gets it though. She wanted Obama to win.

But then again, she also wanted Sarah Palin...so maybe we need to do some more work.

Hello from the South! Come over for Chicken Fried Steak anytime. Of course, we'll have to order out, cuz I don't cook. :o)))

Mama Dawg: Thank you for the personal training offer, but there are others who read this blog who might not take kindly to your suggestions [even though I know they are made in good fun :)]

And who knows, maybe the Democratic ticket in 2012 will be Obama/Palin?

Swankymama: Thanks for the invite. I my statement about Southern hospitality continues to be proven out.

Did you read the article by Peggy Wallace?

We've certainly shown that a majority of Americans reject racial discrimination. Not necessarily other forms of discrimination, though.

This post made me miss the SOuth. Especially the food!

Dang, I haven't had a hush puppy in years. Us Yankees can only get them at Long John Silvers, and that's not a place I frequent.

Trooper, are you implying that people you know IRL read your blog? We'll all try to be on our best platonic behavior from now on.

...and Whoopee Pies, don't forget the Whoopee Pies.

I lived in Florida for 14 years - and even though it is the Southern most state - it is not considered the South.

I grew up in the Yankee north and never met with prejudice until I moved to Florida.

I am not black - I am a jew...and to Florida 'crackers' the two are basically the same.

...ahh , but those Whoopie Pies.

It's after 11 p.m. and after reading this, I am now seriously craving biscuits, fried okra and sweet tea.

Ms. Kennedy's article was eloquently stated... sad there are still people in this world like the lady she encountered at the cemetery...

I was born a Yankee but raised in the South.. unfortunately racism and prejudice are still just a way of life in some parts. But I think, like you, that maybe change for the better, for my children, is coming.

Love the South, lived in the South, ate in the South. Nothing like dipping your Cuban Sandwich in a bowl of Spanish Bean Soup. YUM!!!

Change is a coming!!!

I think racism is still alive in this country, although it pains me to say that. I'd like to think it's in the minority though. And only in the ignorant?!

I didn't vote for Obama, but I'm glad he won. I'm excited about what it means for our country.
